NC State is not keeping a low profile in its head coaching search.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Wolfpack and NFL quarterback Russell Wilson has interviewed for the program’s head coaching vacancy. He joins fellow high-profile former Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers in interviewing for the job.
Wilson is best known as the Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks who made 10 Pro Bowls during a 14-season NFL career that also feature stints with the Broncos, Giants and Steelers.
Prior to turning pro, Wilson played three seasons at NC State before finishing his college career with a single season at Wisconsin in 2011. Wilson retired from the NFL last season and has since worked as an analyst for CBS’ NFL broadcasts. But he’s apparently ready to get back into the locker room, this time as a head coach for his former college football team.
Wilson has some stiff competition for the job, at least in terms of his profile in the program. Per ESPN, Rivers has engaged in “serious discussions” about the vacancy that was opened up when NC State fired longtime head coach Dave Doeren following an Oct. 23 loss to Stanford that dropped the Wolfpack to 3-4.
Doeren spent 13-plus seasons as NC State’s head coach and is the school’s all-time win leaders with a 98-74 record.
