Roma’s Most Logical Summer Signing Could Be Matteo Ruggeri

· · 2 min read
Matteo Ruggeri of Atletico de Madrid looks on during the Spanish League, LaLiga EA Sports, football match played between Atletico de Madrid and RC Celta de Vigo

He may not have been the most heralded transfer in club history, but the minute Angeliño stepped onto the pitch in March 2024, his value was clear: he was fast, direct, and aggressive. Combined with his low center of gravity, those traits made the Spanish wing-back a nuisance to opponents and an asset to Roma’s attack. After surviving the De Rossi-Juric-Ranieri triumvirate, Angeliño was poised to flourish under Gian Piero Gasperino and alongside the club’s other combustible wing-back, Wesley França.

Unfortunately, that never came to pass. After missing nearly the entire 2025-2026 season due to a variety of injuries, Angeliño’s absence forced Wesley into the left wing-back role; not a catastrophic development, but hardly ideal. While we may see the Angeliño-Wesley pairing next season, the club has been intermittently linked to one of Gasperini’s former proteges, Matteo Ruggeri.

The Atletico Madrid left-back’s future is in the balance after the Colchoneros’ recent capture of Alejandro Grimaldo, who is moving from Bayer Leverkusen. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Atletico are likely to put Ruggeri on the transfer market, where Roma are expected to be a major suitor.

While actual negotiations may or may not be underway, our colleagues at Into the Calderon think €25 million would suffice for the 23-year-old

Given the hostile nature of the transfer market, we can safely assume the final cost will be closer to €30 million, if not more, but landing a talented young wing-back with Ruggeri’s skill set and proven ability to succeed under Gasperini could be a bargain.

This is perhaps the most sensible transfer target we’ve covered so far this summer, so we’ll continue to monitor this story as it develops.
