Boston Red Sox star Roman Anthony has now been on the injured list for more than 40 days. The injury remained mysterious for the first month of his absence, but it has now been revealed that the 22-year-old is dealing with a torn ligament in his right ring finger.

Many analysts and media personalities believe that the star has suffered through many setbacks on his road to recovery, but he told reporters on Saturday that he is well on his way to meeting the expected time frame for his return.

“The general timetable for this — we’re approaching it,” Anthony told reporters. “As we approach that and as we get to that day when this is a common time period for this injury, then I think that is when we will address it and say ‘okay, let’s see where we’re at, see how it’s healed.’

“Up until this point, it has been expected to be fully healed yet… I think it’s anywhere from six to eight weeks.”

We will hit that six-week time frame this week. However, Anthony immediately backtracked on that estimation, saying there are “a million different cases” and that “everybody heals differently.” He then floated a ten-week time frame as a possibility.

Ultimately, Anthony says the reason he has been unable to return to baseball activities is that it simply is painful.

“Obviously, it’s progressing. It’s progressing a lot slower than I had imagined in the beginning of this,” Anthony said. “It’s just pain in my hand. That’s what it is, and until it’s not (pain), I’ll be here.”
