Rodri explains why he joined Barcelona and his partnership with Pedri: ‘I don’t understand the debate’

Rodri has revealed the scale of Barcelona’s ambition after their emphatic Champions League start, insisting there is a genuine desire inside the dressing room to bring the European trophy back to Catalonia.

Barcelona opened their campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord, but Rodri was keen to stress that the squad is targeting much more than an impressive opening-night result. 

The midfielder has found a hungry group at Barça and believes that mentality was one of the reasons he chose to join the club.

“We have to admit that it’s been a long time since we won this competition, and we’re changing things, and there’s a real desire to win the Champions League again,” he explained.

The result against Feyenoord was another reminder of Barcelona’s attacking strength, although Rodri insisted the scoreline should not overshadow the difficulty of producing such performances consistently.

“We know how difficult every game is. In the four matches we’ve played [scoring five goals], we’ve done an exceptional job, and it wasn’t just about scoring all five,” he commented.

Rodri said he has discovered a ‘voracious, hungry’ dressing room at Barcelona, adding that this “is one of the reasons” he decided to sign for Barça.

Barcelona have made a strong start domestically and in Europe, but Rodri knows maintaining those standards across a long season will be the real challenge.

Meanwhile, his partnership with Pedri has also attracted attention, although Rodri sees little reason for the debate over whether the two midfielders can play together.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the debate. He’s a great player; when you play with him, it’s very easy. 

“Obviously, you have to adapt, but not only to him, but also to the role Hansi asks of you, and with a player like him alongside you, it’s easier. 

“We understand each other perfectly, and we’ve also been playing together for a while now,” he explained.

The midfielder has already felt a strong connection with Barcelona supporters and appreciated the reception he has received since arriving at the club.

“I’ve felt the affection very closely, and I’m very happy about it because it’s easier for a new player to settle in here,” he explained. 

“I’m here to show what kind of player I am, to be at the level they expect, and above all, to help the team grow.”

Rodri also sought to keep expectations under control after Barcelona’s explosive beginning.

“If anyone expects us to win every game by five goals, they’re mistaken. 

“Our goal is to win every match. We’ve started very well, and it’s not easy because many of us are late in the season,” he concluded.
