Richard Hughes given golden opportunity to finally sign Luis Diaz’s Liverpool successor

Luis Diaz was never replaced at Liverpool after he chose to join Bayern Munich last summer.

The Colombian was sold for £62.5 million with most Liverpool fans thinking that they’d got the deal of the century.

Diaz was going to be 29 years old and only had two years left on his current deal with most people believing that he’d already reached his peak.

However, his 2025-26 campaign with Bayern was his best ever as he managed to contribute to 49 goals across all competitions, leaving Liverpool rather red-faced.

Indeed, the fact that Cody Gakpo failed to step up and fill the void didn’t help matters much either and, now that Mohamed Salah is gone, it’s now clearer than ever that the Reds need to sign a new attacker or two.

And now, Richard Hughes might finally have the chance to get the perfect replacement for Diaz through the Anfield doors.

Tottenham have not been in talks with Rafael Leao, leaving the door open for a Liverpool deal

Liverpool have a lot of left-wingers at their club.

Victor Munoz was brought in this summer and, since Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha both have prominent first-team roles, they already have three options among their ranks.

However, with how badly Gakpo played last term, it feels like they could do with bringing some more firepower in.

Which is why Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on Rafael Leao’s current situation should pique the interest of Liverpool’s fans.

“There are no negotiations between Tottenham and his agent regarding Rafa Leao, nor between Tottenham and Milan,” he shared via his YouTube channel.

Even though Leao may not have had the best campaign with AC Milan during the 2025-26 season, he’s still an extremely talented player.

The Portugal international has got plenty of experience under his belt in both Ligue 1 and the Serie A with his Champions League experience also fairly impressive.

The fact that the Portugal international is also only 26 years old means that he still has plenty of his career to go.

Even though his natural position is left-wing, he can also be used as a number nine if needed.

This versatility would massively help Andoni Iraola out during the 2026-27 campaign, especially with how unlucky they’ve been with injuries over the past couple of years.

There’s obviously a lot of moving parts and they may not even enter negotiations but, the fact that Tottenham aren’t in talks with him means that they could have a free run at signing him.

And, since he can play as a winger or a striker, it’s clear to see why he could become the Reds’ Diaz replacement.
