Reports: Bruins acquire defenseman Will Borgen from Rangers

After completing a trade earlier in the day, the Bruins and New York Rangers reportedly renewed acquaintances this evening to make another deal.

Per Mollie Walker of the New York Post and others, the B’s have acquired defenseman Will Borgen from the Rangers in exchange for a second-round pick in 2027 and a conditional third-round pick in 2028.

Borgen is 29 years old and a right-shot defenseman.

Per Puckpedia, he’s signed through 2030 at a cap hit of $4.1 million per season.

Borgen projects to be a middle- or bottom-pairing defenseman for the B’s, likely taking the place of someone like Andrew Peeke.

He averaged 15:33 TOI at even strength last season, along with around 2 minutes per game on the penalty kill.

Borgen was originally a fourth-round pick by the Buffalo Sabres back in 2015.

Prior to joining the Rangers, Borgen played for both the Sabres and the Seattle Kraken.

Browsing through Twitter, it seems like Rangers fans are, for the most part, happy with this deal from their perspective.

It seems like fans were eager to get out from under Borgen’s contract, so I can’t help but wonder if this deal was already in the works when the Rangers took on Joonas Korpisalo’s contract earlier on Wednesday.

Kind of a “hey, you take our $3 million guy and we’ll take your $4.1 million guy,” I guess?

That’s probably exactly how the negotiations went. I should be a screenwriter, you can feel the tension and drama.

Overall, this move is a bit more of a mixed bag when compared to the Korpisalo trade.

Borgen may have more to offer than he showed on a bad Rangers team last year, and he could be a worthy reclamation project.

Still, bringing that contract on board wipes out the savings you made by trading Korpisalo.

Plus, with Henri Jokiharju still in the mix and both Jordan Harris and Connor Clifton signed today, there are a whole bunch of defensemen in the mix.
