Relegated star positioned to be Liverpool’s surprise saviour
Liverpool are set to have a surprise saviour this summer. A relegated star is in position.
Liverpool need a hero. To replace the last one, actually. Mohamed Salah is no longer a Red and it’s absolutely necessary that they find a replacement.
Even if Salah’s season was poor, he still put up six goals and six assists in the Premier League. Those aren’t numbers that are easy to find – Yankuba Minteh, a proposed signing for the right flank, didn’t match them.
But Liverpool are up against it. Yan Diomande has decided to pick Paris Saint-Germain as his next club, ignoring the Reds’ interest.
It leaves a truly awful market to pick from, with remarkably few solid options. There’s an elite class of player who are entirely out of reach, then a big drop-off to untested young players like Minteh.
That middle bit, then, may be where Liverpool find a saviour. Not so much as the next Salah but instead as a tide over. An older player who can start for a year before moving into more of a squad role after the next great option perks up in 2026/27.

And there may not be a better option for that than Jarrod Bowen. Liverpool have been linked for years, though he finally looks to be on the move this summer after West Ham United’s relegation.
Purely in terms of attacking value, Bowen ranked around the top 10 for right-wingers. That’s enough for the Reds to get a season of value out of an older player – a reliable season, at the very least.
Bowen also ticks the homegrown box and would certainly be available. That feels like the safest bet for Liverpool.
No, this isn’t the direction anyone wanted things to go. Liverpool wanted to splash the cash on a new winger to replace Salah and be a star for them.
But with the market as poor as it is, simply buying themselves an extra year feels like the smart move. Harry Wilson is another option for doing that on a free transfer, if Liverpool feel like gazumping his move to Leeds United.
