Red Wings move into first-place tie behind fourth-inning rally

The Rochester Red Wings continued their postseason push Friday night, rallying from an early two-run deficit to beat the Buffalo Bisons 5-3 at ESL Ballpark and move into a tie for first place in the International League’s second-half standings.

Rochester improved to 79-49 and pulled even with Indianapolis atop the International League’s second-half race thanks to a four-run fourth inning fueled by doubles from Cayden Wallace and Liover Peguero. Chandler Champlain earned the win with 4.1 innings of relief before Yovanny Cruz recorded his fifth save.

The Bisons broke through in the top of the fourth inning after Yohendrick Piñango singled and scored on Jay Harry’s RBI double. Harry later came home on Lenyn Sosa’s RBI single, giving Buffalo a 2-0 lead.

Starter Isaac Lyon was charged with both runs, with Champlain entering in relief to record the final out of the inning.

The Red Wings responded immediately in the bottom half.

Phillip Glasser worked a leadoff walk and Yohandy Morales followed with a single. After a flyout, Wallace lined an RBI double to center field to cut the deficit to one run. Following a walk to Leandro Pineda and a pitching change, Peguero delivered the biggest hit of the night, a three-run double that scored Morales, Wallace and Pineda to put Rochester ahead 4-2.

Buffalo trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fifth when Sean Keys tripled home Josh Smith.

The Red Wings got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Glasser singled, Morales followed with another hit, and after Morales stole second base, Wallace grounded out to bring Glasser home and extend the lead to 5-3.

That proved to be the final run of the game.

Champlain settled things after Buffalo’s fourth-inning rally, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six across 4.1 innings to earn his eighth win.

Cruz worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two while stranding a leadoff double by Harry to secure the save.
