The Boston Red Sox should have, on all accounts, swept the Colorado Rockies during the early week series out in the mountains.

They held Colorado scoreless for eight innings in Game 1 until a three-run triple in the ninth inning gave the Rockies their only lead and only runs of the game in walkoff fashion.

The Red Sox took Game 2 convincingly and jumped out to a big lead in Game 3. They were leading 3-0 in the second, 5-2 in the fourth and 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Boston was one out away from getting out of that seventh with their lead when a soft ground ball was hit to shortstop Marcelo Mayer, who entered the game late in what was supposed to be a rest day for him while he nurses a sore left foot.

Mayer fielded the ball but was unable to cleanly transfer it to his throwing hand. The error led to a two-out rally from the Rockies, who scored three unearned runs and tied the game.

After the game, Mayer told reporters that his mistake cost Boston a win.

“I couldn’t get the ball out of my glove,” Mayer said. “That can’t (expletive) happen.

“Just a brutal error that cost us the game. To me, it’s the most routine ground ball I could possibly get. This game’s 100% on me.”

It has been a season chock-full of compiling incidents like this one from the 23-year-old infielder.

“We did such a good job to get to where we were in the game,” Mayer said. “We put together really good at-bats, Guerrero did his job to get out of the inning, and I just mess it up.”

Boston finished the road trip 3-3 and will return to Fenway Park on Thursday for a four-game series against the first-place New York Yankees.
