NEW YORK — The Red Sox made four roster moves before their game against the Yankees on Sunday.
That includes optioning Mickey Gasper — one of their hottest hitters — to Triple-A Worcester.
As expected, Boston reinstated left fielder/DH Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story from the 60-day injured list.
Anthony Seigler was optioned with Gasper to clear two spots on the active roster.
Gasper reached base in 12 of his 16 plate appearances on this road trip with two homers, one double, two singles and seven walks. He went 11 for 26 (.423) with a .595 on-base percentage, 1.115 slugging percentage, five home runs and three doubles in 11 games after Boston recalled him Aug. 16 from Worcester.
“Very possibly he might win Player of the Week,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “So there’s a very good chance that you might get an American League Player of the Week that we just had to send down. I wouldn’t doubt it. So how difficult is it? Very difficult.”
Seigler batted .250 with a .331 on-base percentage, .405 slugging percentage and .736 OPS in 48 games. He has three home runs, 12 doubles, one triple, 13 RBIs, 18 walks and 28 strikeouts.
This is a tough subtraction to the clubhouse dynamic. Seigler is a fiery player whose energy rubs off on his teammates.
He’s been important to the team’s personality during their 45-13 turnaround.
“It was bittersweet,” Tracy said. “I mean it. We’re really excited that Roman’s here, really excited Trevor’s here. But have to talk to two guys that were instrumental over this stretch of helping our team get back to where it is right now and professionally explain to them the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing and keep them focused to go down and continue to get reps so that they’re ready for the next call. So it was an exciting night and also a very difficult night at the same time.”
Anthony hasn’t played in a game for the Red Sox since May 4 due to a torn ligament under his right ring finger, while Story last played May 14. The shortstop is returning from surgery that he underwent May 21 to repair a sports hernia.
Anthony went 7 for 25 (.280) with a .367 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage, .967 OPS, two home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, four walks and eight strikeouts in eight rehab games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester.
Story didn’t fare as well. The 33-year-old went 6 for 35 (.171) with a .189 on-base percentage, .200 slugging percentage and .389 OPS in 10 rehab games for Worcester. He had just one extra-base hit (a double), three RBIs and one walk while striking out 11.
“Obviously they’ve been down a while and have been rehabbing a while and two guys that mean a lot to us,” Tracy said. “So finally getting them here, biding our time and being able to get him here healthy and kind of stretched out physically is great and we’re really excited to have them back.”
