With the MLB trade deadline less than two months away, the Boston Red Sox are still trying to figure out if they’re buyers or sellers.

Given the team’s poor start, some think the Red Sox should sell at the deadline and start preparing for 2027. Considering how tight the American League standings are, however, others think trading away veterans might be premature.

2004 World Series champion Kevin Millar falls in the latter camp.

“They gotta figure something out. They’re only 3.5 games out of the Wild Card. That’s why you don’t blow it up yet,” Millar told MLB Network’s Brian Kenny on Friday. “It’s a weird year… That staff, with Chapman at the back end, can win a World Series. They have to get a dude that hits… I have to wait this out and see.”

To Millar’s point, Boston’s pitching staff and defense have been excellent, ranking ninth in ERA and first in defensive runs saved. The issue has been the offense, which ranks 25th in runs per game and clearly needs a boost.

Getting Roman Anthony and Trevor Story back later this season will help, but the lineup was struggling before they went down. The Red Sox are still close enough to contention that one hot streak could turn their season around and vault them back into contention.

It’s still early June, so a lot could change over the next six or seven weeks. Boston got off to a slow start last year before catching fire in July, so perhaps that will happen again this season.
