The Red Sox bullpen is getting a veteran boost.
Tommy Kahnle is on his way to Fenway Park and the Red Sox will select him to their roster, a source told MassLive. Kahnle had been in Triple-A Worcester with an opt-out and Boston needed to make a decision on him by Thursday.
With the WooSox, Kahnle, 36, had posted a 1.40 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 18 appearances.
This will be Kahnle’s 12th major league season and he has 456 appearances on his résumé. Interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy got a firsthand look at Kahnle when both began the season in Worcester.
“I can speak for when I was down there,” Tracy said. “Veteran player, been around a long time and has a ton of big league time. He’s got the changeup, he’s added a slider and throwing a little harder. You know he’s capable and he’s throwing the ball well down there.”
Kahnle is expected to be available for Thursday’s series finale against the Orioles. There is no word on a corresponding 40-man roster move yet.
