The announcement of an IMAX re-release for filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two arrives days after the final trailer was released for Dune: Part Three. The franchise is based on the groundbreaking sci-fi novels by celebrated author Frank Herbert, first published in 1965. Herbert wrote six novels, and after his death, his son Brian and author Kevin J. Anderson expanded the franchise with numerous sequels and prequels.

Dune was first adapted for the big screen in 1984 by David Lynch with Kyle MacLachlan starring as Paul Atreides. Unfortunately, Lynch’s adaptation was met with divisive critical backlash and failed to soar at the box office. However, it has since received a cult following many decades since its release.

Villeneuve has certainly invigorated new life into the iconic science fiction franchise with his groundbreaking trilogy. Dune: Part One, released in 2021, covers the first half of the original novel and stars Timothée Chalamet, Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, and many more. The movie achieved critical and financial success, grossing over $411 million worldwide and won six Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.

Dune: Part Two was released in 2024 and saw the return of Chalamet as Paul Atreides in a movie rated nearly-perfect on Rotten Tomatoes at 92% by critics. The sequel was an even bigger success to the 2021 installment and grossed over $715 million worldwide against a $190 million reported production budget. The sequel won two awards out of five nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, and has paved the way for an even bigger release with Dune: Part Three.
