‘Real Sociedad is my home’ – Oyarzabal brushes off Barca rumours

Mikel Oyarzabal insisted “Real Sociedad and San Sebastian are my home” as he played down rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona.

The 29-year-old is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, lifting the Copa del Rey with La Real before being named in Spain’s World Cup squad.

His 15 LaLiga goals this season are the most he has ever managed in a single season, while he has already scored two goals and provided one assist in two World Cup matches for La Roja.

Overall, Oyarzabal has scored 133 goals and provided 60 assists in 437 appearances for La Real, winning two Copa del Rey titles during his time with the club.

And since his first-team debut in 2015-16, only Lionel Messi (268), Luis Suarez (223), Antoine Griezmann (222), Iago Aspas (218), Karim Benzema (211) and Gerard Moreno (159) have directly contributed to more top-flight goals than Oyarzabal (148).

Despite rumours of a move linking him to LaLiga winners Barca, Oyarzabal has no intention of leaving La Real.

“If I’m being linked to Barça, it’s because they think I’m doing things well, but I’m focused on the World Cup,” Oyarzabal told Mundo Deportivo.

“I don’t give it much importance, and I don’t waste much time on those things.

“I’m calm. I’ve said it a thousand times, Real Sociedad and San Sebastian are my home. It’s my safe haven, where I grew up, and Real Sociedad is the club that gave me the opportunity to be here today.

“So, in that respect, I’m calm, without going crazy. We haven’t talked about a renewal yet. I have two years left on my contract and there’s still a long way to go.”
