Derrick Henry has never been subtle about how he rates his quarterback, and Sunday’s demolition in Indianapolis gave him fresh ammunition. Asked about Lamar Jacksonafter Baltimore’s 41-23 win over the Colts, the veteran running back kept it short.

“Best player in the league,” Henry said. “Best player for a long time.”

The performance backed him up. Jackson completed 17 of 25 passes for 324 yards and a touchdown while posting a 124.2 passer rating, adding a five-yard rushing score in the first quarter. His biggest strike was a 54-yard touchdown to Zay Flowers in the second quarter that pushed Baltimore’s lead to 21-6 and effectively ended Indianapolis’ afternoon.

Henry did plenty himself. He ran for three touchdowns, including a 32-yarder, as the Ravens piled up 202 rushing yards on 37 carries and finished with 506 total yards. Baltimore held the ball for more than 35 minutes and scored five touchdowns, four of them on the ground.

The timing of Henry’s comment carries weight. Allen edged Jackson for the 2024 award by a 27-23 margin in first-place votes, the closest race since 2003, despite Jackson being named first-team All-Pro by 30 of 50 voters. Matthew Stafford took the award last season in another tight finish over Drake Maye.

Jackson comes into 2026 healthy after hamstring and back issues limited his mobility a year ago, and he still has Flowers, Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews as his primary targets. A two-time MVP, he would become the rare quarterback to claim a third if he can out-duel Allen over the next four months.

Henry’s own history with Jackson explains the conviction. He has previously called Jackson the best player in the league on multiple occasions, including after his 1,921-yard debut season in Baltimore, when he credited Jackson’s running threat with opening lanes for him. Sunday only reinforced the argument.

Baltimore returns home to host the Saints next Sunday, while Allen and the Bills will not meet the Ravens until November 1 in Buffalo.
