Rashid takes five wickets as MI beat Super Giants

Rashid Khan took 5-17 as MI London defeated Manchester Super Giants by 45 runs in The Hundred.

The Afghanistan spinner finished with the fifth-best figures in the history of the men’s competition as Super Giants failed to chase a challenging target of 184.

Scores of 62 off 31 balls from Will Jacks and 54 off 28 from Nicholas Pooran helped MI set up their formidable total at the Oval.

Jacks put on 71 for the first wicket with James Vince (29), hitting three fours and six sixes before he skied a catch to Aiden Markram off Noor Ahmad.

Pooran thrashed five fours and four sixes from number three to set up a final score of 183-6, finally falling to Josh Tongue (2-13) as three batters were dismissed from the last eight balls of the innings.

Needing quick runs, Super Giants captain Markram got his side off to a quick start, hitting 50 from 26 balls.

Rashid broke an opening partnership of 59, bowling Tim Seifert (17) and then having Jos Buttler caught in the deep for two.

Markram found Sam Curran at mid-wicket off Nathan Sowter before Rashid ripped through the middle order, removing Heinrich Klaasen, Tom Moores and Liam Dawson.

Wickets continued to tumble as Super Giants made a futile attempt to thrash their way to their target, with Sonny Baker the last to fall as the visitors were bowled out for 138 with five balls to spare.

Super Giants and MI were two of four teams on eight points at the start of the match, with the former in third and the latter in sixth based on their net run-rates.

The win moves MI up to second, above Welsh Fire on net run-rate, while Super Giants slip to fifth following their third successive defeat.

Trent Rockets 146-4 (100 balls): Duckett 64 (47); Carse 2-20

Sunrisers Leeds 141-4 (100 balls): Brook 46 (33); Amir 2-20

Ben Duckett struck a half-century and took a sharp diving catch to remove England team-mate Harry Brook as The Hundred leaders Trent Rockets beat Sunrisers Leeds by five runs.

The 31-year-old smacked Liam Patterson-White for five consecutive fours to bring up his fifty off 35 balls, but it was an otherwise measured innings from the opener, who made 64 (47), including nine boundaries, to help Rockets post 146-4.

A 71-run third-wicket stand between Mitchell Marsh and Brook put Sunrisers in control of their chase, with just 35 runs required from 20 deliveries.

However, Mohammad Amir only conceded five runs off the next four balls before Brook found a leaping Duckett in the covers to depart for 46 (33).

Amir had Marsh (41 off 35) caught behind by Sam Billings five balls later, finishing with figures of 2-20, and an equation of 25 runs from 10 deliveries proved too much for Dan Lawrence and Tom Alsop.

Duckett had earlier anchored his side’s innings, with his knock in stark contrast to Trent Rockets debutant Aneurin Donald.

Introduced early in the powerplay after Brydon Carse (2-20) bowled Finn Allen, Donald thrashed three sixes and dominated his 63-run second-wicket stand with Duckett, hitting 40 runs off 19 deliveries.

Carse also accounted for Donald, whose free-scoring was unmatched on either side, while Duckett was bowled by Nathan Ellis with five balls remaining.

Tim David was laboured for his 24 (22) but struck a crucial six off the penultimate ball of the innings.

A fourth consecutive victory moves Trent Rockets four points clear at the top of The Hundred table. Sunrisers Leeds remain fifth, with two wins and two defeats.

Welsh Fire face Southern Brave in Cardiff, with the women’s match at 15:00 BST and the men’s game 18:30.
