Rangers have confirmed striker Youssef Chermiti has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The 22-year-old picked up the injury after a collision with the advertising hoardings during Sunday’s Scottish Premiership defeat to Hibernian, and now faces a significant spell on the sidelines.

Chermiti joined Rangers for a reported £8m from Everton last summer and enjoyed a strong debut campaign in Scotland.

His 15 goals in the Scottish Premiership last season were the fourth-most, while only Benjamin Nygren (21) bettered Chermiti’s 20 direct goal contributions.

Chermiti led Rangers in shots (78) in the league last season while also overperforming his 13.04 xG (expected goals).

Last week, Rangers rejected a bid from Galatasaray, reported to be worth €25m (£22m) for Chermiti, whose chances of a transfer away from Ibrox this summer now look slim.

Following assessment, striker Youssef Chermiti suffered an ACL injury in Sunday’s match with Hibernian. Youssef will be out of action for a significant period of time.

It is a big blow for Derek McInnes, who is yet to win a competitive match as Rangers boss.

Rangers drew with Dundee United in their season opener and lost 2-1 in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie against Jagiellonia Bialystok, with the return leg at Ibrox this Thursday.

Chermiti’s absence will now put the pressure on Lawrence Shankland to provide a goal-scoring touch following his switch from Hearts.
