It came as a bit of a surprise to some folks this offseason when the Los Angeles Rams secured quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Some people felt that Simpson was selected too high in the draft, but reporting indicates that the Rams were very high on the former Alabama quarterback and worked hard to keep their plan to draft him under wraps.
Despite that, it took a long time this offseason for the franchise and its new quarterback to agree on what his contract would look like. But now, both parties can officially put that behind them. Simpson came to terms with the Rams on his rookie contract this week, signing a four-year deal worth a fully guaranteed $25.4 million. There is also a fifth-year option on the contract and a $14.94 million signing bonus.

Reports indicated that Simpson hasn’t quite lived up to all the expectations that were set for him this offseason, as the rookie signal-caller was trailing both Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett in the quarterback battle during offseason workouts. But there is still the entirety of training camp and preseason remaining for Simpson to snag the backup job.
That should be the base expectation for Simpson, as Stafford is approaching two full decades in the league, and while he had his best season yet in 2025, it’s unclear how much longer he’ll play. The Rams are likely betting on Stafford being their future franchise quarterback, and how his first preseason goes will give the team an early idea of whether the contract they just gave Simpson is worth it.
