The Los Angeles Rams ran into a buzzsaw in Melbourne, Australia Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers, resulting in a 27-7 loss that has fans and media questioning coach Sean McVay‘s team. NFL analyst Steve Young chimed in afterward saying he’s not panicking on the Rams yet ahead of their next game on September 21 vs. the New York Giants.
On Friday, legendary former Steelers coach Bill Cowher joined The Pat McAfee Show during which he revealed that he thinks the Rams are in a good position heading toward their second game despite the embarrassing loss, echoing Young’s sentiment on the NFC West contenders.
“Are we worried about the Rams? Are we worried about Matthew Stafford?” McAfee asked Cowher on his show.

“No, no. I think if Sean (McVay) had to do it all over again, I think that decision of going over there the day of was just not a good one for that long of a flight,” Cowher replied. “I think, you look at all the preseason talk of them, the team, and going out and getting Aaron Donald to come back, Myles Garrett, and what they have on offense, the preseason pick, I think it’s probably motivated Seattle and motivated the San Francisco 49ers.”
McVay refused to blame his team’s difficult travel schedule on the loss afterward. Cowher highlighted the quality of opponent the Rams faced, a big reason for the Rams’ blowout loss.
“And again, this 49er team, they were beat up last year. They haven’t had a lot of these players. Deebo Samuel in this offense, is a great, great fit. Mike Evans is a great addition…That is a good offensive line, and I just love Kyle (Shanahan’s) system.”

Stafford and the Rams will get another crack at Shanahan’s 49ers on December 13 at Levi’s Stadium, but are now focused on moving forward and putting Thursday’s loss behind them. The Giants will be a tough test with new head coach John Harbaugh leading a replenished roster, but the Rams have the talent to beat anyone in the NFL, and Cowher clearly knows it.
