Quinn Hughes gets the last laugh after relentless booing in Vancouver

Fans relentlessly booed Quinn Hughes every time he touched the puck, but Hughes got the last laugh by scoring a goal for his 500th NHL point against the team that drafted him in 2018 and traded him to Minnesota last December.

Hughes’ second-period goal and helper on Kirill Kaprizov’s 13th goal of the season fueled a 4-2 victory over the Canucks, giving Minnesota a back-to-back sweep after Saturday’s 5-1 win in Seattle.

“It was good. It’s a competitive market. Passion with the fan base is what makes it special to play here,” Hughes said afterward, being professional and calm as always.

Fans booed when Kaprizov took the ice in pregame warmups:

They cheered when he was checked hard into the boards:

They even trolled Wild fans with a “He’s not signing” chant:

The crowd got pretty quiet when Hughes found the back of the net:

And the loud boos went silent after Hughes connected with Kaprizov for a 4-0 lead early in the third period:

“I was here for 6 1/2 years, tried my best,” he said, adding that “seeing the fans and being able to play here again was pretty cool for me.”

In the locker room, without reporters on hand, Hughes told his teammates, “On a personal note, that one meant a lot to me.”

Overall, the Wild dominated after a sluggish first period. They outshot the Canucks 29-7 in the second and third periods and held Vancouver without a shot on their only power play.

At 8-3-2, the Wild lead the Western Conference with 18 points. Up next is another road test in Utah against the Mammoth on Tuesday night.
