’Project Hail Mary’s Directors Next Sci-Fi Adaptation Series Officially Hits 3 Million Milestone

2026 has been a wildly successful year for sci-fi movies, but not many are going to stick with viewers as long as Project Hail Mary. The movie is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Andy Weir, and if his name sounds familiar, it’s because he also wrote the book that inspired Ridley Scott‘s 2015 box office hit, The Martian. Project Hail Mary came into theaters as Amazon’s most expensive movie ever, carrying a $200 million budget, but it proved to be a worthy investment by grossing around $684 million at the global box office. Leading star Ryan Gosling is expected to be awarded an Oscar nomination for his performance as Ryland Grace in the film, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller could also be nominated for their work helming the sci-fi adaptation.

Lord and Miller are best known for their work writing and producing Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, and they’re also involved in the third and final film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is scheduled for release in theaters on June 18, 2027. Through their production company, Lord Miller productions, the duo have also optioned the rights to the popular Bobiverse sci-fi book series, which has officially sold three audiobook copies since its launch in 2016. Audible announced back in July that the franchise’s sixth installment, The Infinite Extent, was getting a new release narrated by Ray Porter, who also narrated Project Hail Mary‘s acclaimed audiobook. The new release dropped on Audible in September and is now available around the world. It has helped the Bobiverse reach nearly three million audiobooks sold.

How Many Bobiverse Sci-Fi Books Are There?

The Bobiverse has been around for 10 years now, and the franchise started with the release of We Are Legion (We Are Bob) in 2016. The franchise continued only one year later with not one, but two new releases: For We Are Many and All These Worlds. The Bobiverse went on hiatus for three years before coming back with its fourth book, Heaven’s River, in 2020. Books five and six, Not Til We Are Lost and The Infinite Extent, were released in 2024 and 2026, respectively. Author Dennis E. Taylor has confirmed that a seventh and final book is being written right now, but he’s also not ruled out the franchise’s return beyond that with non-linear spin-offs.
