Prof Hunjo Leads LASU Representation at 4th Afro-Brazilian Studies Conference in Brazil

The Lagos State University Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) has commenced its 4th International Conference in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, bringing together academics, policymakers, diplomats, traditional rulers, and cultural stakeholders from Nigeria and Brazil to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The conference, which opened on Monday, June 29, is themed “South-South Cooperation: Nigeria and Brazil’s Roles in Fostering Collaboration among Emerging Economies.” It is focused on promoting partnerships between the two countries in areas such as economic development, technological innovation, cultural exchange, and sustainable development.

Participants are also expected to explore strategies for deepening South-South cooperation, enhancing bilateral relations, and advancing reforms in global governance amid changing international realities.

The opening ceremony, held at the Conference Hall of the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), featured colourful cultural performances, including music and traditional dances, highlighting the shared historical and cultural heritage between Nigeria and Brazil.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Owoade, accompanied by Ayaba Abiwunmi Owoade; Portugal’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Santos; and the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Pedro Lawal, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Also present were the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Professor Miguez, and the Vice-Chancellor of the State University of Bahia (UNEB).

Lagos State University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, was represented at the conference by the University’s Orator, Professor Henry Hunjo.

The LASU delegation, led by the Director of LASUCAS, Professor Tayo Ajayi, includes Professor Salami Dada of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Associate Professor Sunday Bamisile, Dr Adetola Oye, former Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, and the Deputy Registrar of LASUCAS, Dr Victoria Opaleye.

Other participants include Professor Adejumo of the University of Lagos, Paula Gomes, a long-time Cultural Attaché to the Alaafin of Oyo, alongside Brazilian traditional religion practitioners and cultural leaders.

Organisers say the conference will serve as a platform for scholarly discussions, policy dialogue, and cultural diplomacy aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Brazil while advancing the goals of South-South cooperation.
