As we gear up for the 2026 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down nearly every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player’s background, high school recruiting rankings, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
On the defensive line, there’s a clear opportunity for someone to emerge as the next All‑SEC edge rusher, and one sophomore is positioning himself to seize it. Returning starter T.J. Searcy gives A&M a familiar, veteran presence who can anchor the edge and hold up against the run. His sack total last season (1.5) doesn’t suggest elite pass‑rush production, but in the SEC, starting every game requires balancing run support, gap integrity, and pressure and Searcy handled that workload.
What makes Searcy intriguing is his frame. At his size, he already looks like an NFL‑ready edge who can withstand the physicality of the conference’s best offensive lines. He finished 2025 with 32 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two pass deflections. If he can add a couple of reliable pass‑rush plans to his game this season, he could hear his name called within the first two days of the NFL Draft.

The former four‑star prospect is a two‑year letterwinner at Florida (2023–24), earning Freshman All‑SEC honors in 2023 and landing on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll in both seasons. Across 1,114 career snaps and 37 games (17 starts), he’s totaled 91 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and five quarterback pressures. He’s logged at least one tackle in 34 games and recorded 3+ tackles in 16 contests.
The defensive end battle isn’t settled, but a few names have separated. With Cashius Howell setting the standard last year, Mike Elko is looking for the next impact edge. T.J. Searcy, Marco Jones, and Anto Saka are all in the mix, but Searcy’s 13 starts in this system give him a natural head start. Still, this spot is less about who starts and more about who fits each situation, and Elko’s staff will rotate to maximize matchups.
