Preserve sacrifices of Nigeria’s democratic heroes – Kefas

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has called on Nigerians to preserve and strengthen the democratic gains achieved over the years in honour of those who struggled for the nation’s freedom and constitutional governance.

The governor stated this in a Democracy Day message issued Friday in Jalingo, to commemorate the June 12 national holiday.

Describing democracy as the best form of government despite the challenges, he noted that democracy remains the most viable system of governance because of its emphasis on separation of powers, independent judiciary, and a free press, which he described as the pillars of a democratic society.

According to him, Nigeria’s democratic journey has endured difficult political periods over the decades but has continued to survive and emerge stronger.

The governor also applauded President Tinubu, describing him as a consummate democrat who has demonstrated courage, conviction, and commitment to the nation’s democratic development.

He noted that under Tinubu’s leadership, the executive arm of government has not undermined the independence of the other arms, adding that the president has played significant roles in nurturing and consolidating democracy in the country.

Kefas urged Nigerians to continue working collectively to advance democratic values and strengthen the rule of law. He stressed the importance of active citizen participation in governance and reminded citizens of their responsibilities under the social contract established through the ballot box.

“The right to vote is one that citizens must continue to protect and cherish with all sense of responsibility,” he said.

The governor also commended the
media for its contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth, particularly its role in resisting tyranny and fighting injustice.

He emphasized that no democracy can thrive without a free press and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Expressing optimism about the future of the nation’s democracy, Kefas said continued adherence to constitutional governance by all arms and institutions of government would further strengthen democratic rule in Nigeria.

He also paid tribute to the nation’s armed forces for their contributions to deepening Nigeria’s democratic experience.

Reflecting on the country’s democratic history, the governor honoured statesmen and other patriots who fought against authoritarian rule and laid the foundations for a system based on constitutionalism and the rule of law.

“Their labour and dreams shall not be in vain. Our country today stands as a testimony to their legendary sacrifices and the foundations they have laid,” he said.
