Manchester City are facing growing pressure from rival Premier League clubs for a heavy sanction after an independent commission found them guilty of serious financial-rule breaches spanning nine seasons.
The punishment has not yet been decided, but the scale of the findings has opened the door to a wide range of possible sanctions.
Those could include a significant points deduction, financial penalties or other sporting measures, while more dramatic outcomes continue to be debated publicly.
Rival clubs want swift and severe Man City punishment
According to Football Insider, rival clubs are pushing for the Premier League process to move quickly and for City to face a punishment that reflects the seriousness of the commission’s findings.
Possible sanctions being discussed around the game reportedly include points deductions, relegation and transfer restrictions.
Stripping trophies has also been raised in public debate, although there has been no confirmation that such a punishment will form part of the independent commission’s eventual decision.
City were found guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules and three of four charges concerning failures to co-operate with the league’s investigation.
Scale of the verdict means punishment debate will only intensify
The official Premier League statement makes clear that the sanction will be decided separately at another private hearing.
The commission found that City used “sham” arrangements to inflate revenues and reduce costs between 2009/10 and 2017/18, while also concluding that the club made repeated efforts to frustrate the investigation.
City have the right to appeal the findings, with 2 October set as the deadline to exercise that option.
That distinction is important. Rival clubs may want a severe punishment, but they do not determine the sanction, that responsibility sits with the independent commission.
Given the unprecedented nature of the case, though, it is understandable why pressure is building for a penalty that goes beyond what has been seen in previous Premier League financial cases.
For City, the biggest uncertainty is now not whether breaches were found, but what those findings will ultimately mean in sporting terms.
Until the sanction hearing and any appeal process are completed, talk of relegation, stripped titles or transfer bans remains possible rather than confirmed.
