Prediction: Spain vs Czech Republic

Looking to extend on their Nations League romp this weekend, Spain will welcome the Czech Republic to Oviedo on Saturday night.

With a stacked schedule pencilled in from across the continent, there are plenty of eye-catching betting promotions available.

Verdict: Spain to score in both halves

Starting with the hosts, getting their hands on a second World Cup crown over the summer and embarking on an historic North American adventure, Spain have only continued on their record-breaking purple patch. Getting their Nations League campaign underway with a stellar second-half comeback away at World Cup bronze medalists England as they eventually left Wembley with a thrilling 3-2 victory, La Roja are riding an astonishing wave of momentum. Last seen earlier in the week putting in another dominant display as they cruised their way to a thumping 4-1 win against Croatia, Luis de la Fuente’s reigning world champions are almost universally regarded as the standout Nations League contender this year. In fact, extending on from their famous night in New Jersey back on July 19th, Spain have now won all of their previous nine straight appearances across all competitions.

While 19-year-old Ballon d’Or contender Lamine Yamal might have notched a trio of strikes in his opening two Nations League appearances over the past week, Barcelona’s attacking talisman could be handed a deserved rest here. Left as an unused substitute against Croatia earlier in the week, new PSG recruit Ferran Torres should be handed a full recall.

Likewise, given what is a speedy turnaround ahead of Saturday’s showdown in Oviedo, the Barcelona trio of Dani Olmo, Pedri and former Manchester City superstar Rodri should feature from the start. Only further underlining his status as Spain’s number one choice, Unai Simon will start between the sticks.

Czech Republic

As for the visitors, while the Czech Republic might have touched down in North America over the summer enjoying their own respective flurry, Santi Denia’s new squad endured a public World Cup nightmare. Only putting one-point on the board from any of their three Group A showdowns and finishing rock-bottom of the table, Saturday’s guests have rightfully come under a huge amount of scrutiny. Getting their Nations League charge underway with back-to-back defeats at home against Croatia and England over the past week, Denia’s side couldn’t have asked for a tougher examination when they travel to Oviedo this weekend. Signing off their World Cup nightmare with a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Mexico on June 25th, the Czech Republic have failed to win any of their previous five appearances across all competitions (four defeats, one draw).

Shown a first-half red card against England earlier in the week, Lyon playmaker Pavel Sulc will miss out on Saturday night as the 25-year-old serves a Nations League suspension. Still recovering from an ankle injury that he picked up in North America over the summer, West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has not been included in the Czech Republic’s squad.

Likewise, missing out in Prague on Tuesday night after picking up a reported knee injury, Hoffenheim defender Vladimir Coufal is not expected to feature here. Making a summer switch to Premier League outfit Newcastle, Lukas Hornicek could be handed a full recall between the sticks.

Spain vs Czech Republic Key Factors to Consider

  • When Spain and the Czech Republic last met for a Nations League showdown back in June 2022, La Roja claimed a 2-0 victory in Malaga.
  • In fact, La Roja are unbeaten in all of their seven historic meetings against Saturday’s guests (five wins, two draws).
  • Continuing on from their World Cup success back in July, Spain have now won all of their previous nine appearances across all competitions.
  • Likewise, the reigning world champions are unbeaten in each of their last 20 straight matchups across all competitions.
  • Including consecutive Nations League defeats, the Czech Republic have failed to win any of their previous five appearances across all competitions (four losses, one draw).

Only continuing on a sensational run since their World Cup success over the summer, Spain will simply be looking to make another Nations League statement here. In the midst of an iconic purple patch, La Roja have got their League A charge off to a flying start. Winning each of their previous nine consecutive appearances across all competitions, the reigning world champions are unsurprisingly pencilled in as a landslide contender in Oviedo. Meeting a Czech Republic squad who find themselves at the heart of an extended crisis, Saturday’s guests couldn’t have asked for a tougher examination this weekend.
