Prediction: Netherlands vs Serbia

· · 3 min read

The Netherlands will look to strengthen their position near the top of UEFA Nations League Group A2 when they welcome Serbia on Sunday evening.

Xavi’s side have made a solid start to the campaign and currently sit second in the section with five points from their opening three matches, while Serbia are still searching for their first point after suffering three consecutive defeats.

Netherlands

The Netherlands have enjoyed a promising opening to their Nations League campaign and remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

Oranje began with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Germany before recording a 2-1 victory over Serbia in the reverse fixture at the end of September. They followed that up with an impressive comeback against Greece, recovering from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw and preserve their unbeaten start.

That resilience could prove significant later in the group, particularly given the difficult fixtures that still await against both Greece and Germany in November.

The Dutch also boast an excellent overall record in this competition. Since the Nations League was introduced, they have reached the final once and finished fourth on another occasion, while suffering only three defeats in 26 matches.

Team News

Xavi may make several changes following the draw with Greece. Ryan Gravenberch, Noa Lang and Tijjani Reijnders all impressed after coming into the game, with Reijnders notably scoring the late equaliser.

In attack, injuries to Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey continue to limit options, meaning AZ striker Mexx Meerdink could retain his place after scoring twice in his first two international appearances.

Serbia arrive in the Netherlands under increasing pressure after a difficult start to the competition.

The Eagles have lost all three of their Nations League fixtures so far, beginning with a home defeat to Greece before suffering another narrow loss against Sunday’s opponents. Their latest setback came against Germany, who recorded a 2-0 victory to deepen Serbia’s problems.

Those results continue a worrying trend for Veljko Paunovic’s side, who have now lost five consecutive matches in all competitions. Serbia have not celebrated a victory since beating Saudi Arabia in a friendly in March, while their last competitive success came against Latvia in November 2025.

The lack of momentum has left them rooted to the bottom of Group A2, and with the group beginning to take shape, a positive result in Amsterdam is becoming increasingly important.

Team News

Despite their struggles, Serbia have not reported any fresh injury concerns and are expected to field a familiar lineup.

Luka Jovic remains their primary attacking threat and will once again be tasked with leading the line, while experienced midfielders Nemanja Maksimovic and Nemanja Gudelj should attempt to provide stability in the centre of the pitch.

Key Factors to Consider

  • The Netherlands are unbeaten after three Nations League matches.
  • Oranje came from two goals down to draw with Greece last time out.
  • Serbia have lost all three matches in Group A2.
  • The visitors have suffered five consecutive defeats in all competitions.
  • Tijjani Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch and Noa Lang all impressed against Greece.
  • Serbia lost 2-1 when these sides met earlier in the campaign.

Conclusion

The Netherlands have not always been at their best during this Nations League campaign, but they have shown resilience and found ways to collect important points.

Serbia, by contrast, are struggling badly for confidence and results. While they possess enough individual quality to make the match competitive, their current form makes it difficult to believe they can spring an upset away from home.

Expect the Dutch to control much of the contest and create the better opportunities. Serbia may threaten at spells, but the Netherlands should have enough quality to secure all three points and maintain their push for a place in the quarter-finals.
