Prediction: Fenerbahce vs Lyon

Two camps who will turn their attention back to Champions League qualifying action on Tuesday night, Fenerbahce will welcome Lyon to Istanbul for their first-leg showdown.

With Europe’s elite domestic leagues set to make their respective returns over the next week, there are plenty of attractive betting promotions available.

Fenerbahce

Starting with the hosts, while Fenerbahce might have embarked on a routine Champions League quarrying romp since getting their European adventure underway last month, the Turkish icons certainly came crashing back down to earth over the weekend. Although Ismail Kartal’s camp might have a huge amount of pressure on their shoulders this season in the race to claim a first domestic crown since 2014, the Yellow Canaries endured a nightmare start to the 2026/27 campaign. Suffering an infamous collapse away at Genclerbirligi on Saturday as they eventually slumped to a 2-1 defeat, Fenerbahce know the importance of claiming an immediate response here. Despite shipping just a sole strike during their quartet of Champions League appearances over the past month, Kartal’s side should be bracing themselves for a potentially stern examination in Istanbul.

While Belgium international Romelu Lukaku might have completed a blockbuster move to Istanbul this month, it remains to be seen if the former Manchester United striker will make his Fenerbahce debut here. Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines with an Achilles tendon injury.

Bagging what turned out to be a consolation Genclerbirligi over the weekend and now finding the net in all of his previous five consecutive appearances across all competitions, the red-hot Talisca will spearhead Fenerbahce’s charge.

As for the visitors, keeping their respective Champions League qualifying dreams alive last week as they mounted an essential second-leg comeback, Lyon will be desperate to claim a major European scalp. Eventually edging past Sparta Prague thanks to a thrilling 4-2 aggregate win, Paulo Fonseca’s camp have certainly gained a reputation for their lively outcomes on either side of the summer interval. However, signing off the 2025/26 campaign with a nightmare 4-0 drumming against Lens on May 17th, Lyon have shown some extended issues on the road. Including a first-leg 2-1 defeat in Prague on August 4th, Tuesday’s guests have mustered just a sole win from any of their previous eight competitive showdowns away from the Groupama Stadium – a run that stems back to February 7th.

Both still dealing with respective knee injuries, Lyon will travel to Istanbul without Czech Republic international Pavel Sulc and summer recruit Mads Bidstrup. Likewise, French youngster Khalis Merah remains on the sidelines with an ankle issue.

Completing a summer switch from Italian giants Juventus on an initial loan deal, Belgium international Lois Openda will lead the line here. Now in his second campaign among France’s elite, one-time Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton will start in the middle of the park.

Fenerbahce vs Lyon Key Factors to Consider

  • When Fenerbahce and Lyon last met for a competitive showdown back in January 2025, Tuesday’s opponents played out a 0-0 Europa League stalemate in Istanbul.
  • Lyon are unbeaten in all of their five historic battles against Fenerbahce across all competitions (four wins, one draw).
  • Les Gones have recorded just a sole win from any of their previous eight competitive away fixtures across all competitions.
  • Fenerbahce have suffered just a single competitive defeat in Istanbul since the end of January.
  • Brazilian marksman Talisca has found the net in all of his previous five consecutive appearances across all competitions.

Getting their domestic campaign underway with a 2-1 defeat away at Genclerbirligi over the weekend, Fenerbahce have a huge amount of pressure on their shoulders here. Knowing the importance of claiming an immediate response on Tuesday night, neutrals will be hoping for a real Champions League qualifying thriller from Istanbul. With Lyon remarkably mustering just a sole victory on their travels since the start of January, Les Gones have also gained a reputation for their lively outings on either side of the summer interval.
