In what could prove to be an action-packed MLS showdown late on Sunday night, Chicago will welcome Portland to Soldier Field.
With Europe’s elite domestic leagues set to officially make their respective returns over the next week, there are plenty of intriguing betting promotions available.
Verdict: Chicago Fire win & both teams to score
Chicago Fire
Starting with the hosts, flying out of the traps when opening their Leagues Cup adventure this month, Chicago certainly find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Scrapping it out at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, Gregg Berhalter’s side have rightfully received a string of plaudits. Winning all of their three Leagues Cup showdowns by an aggregate score of 7-2 and cruising their way to a knockout stage ticket, Chicago are in the midst of a real purple patch. Getting August underway with a 2-1 MLS win against Charlotte, Sunday’s hosts have also impressed with their free-scoring performances in the final third. Sat firmly in the driving seat to punch a play-off ticket, Berhalter’s side have notched at least a pair of goals in eight of their previous nine matchups across all competitions.
Still sidelined with a long-term knee injury and yet to make a single appearance across any competition so far this calendar year, Portuguese midfielder Andre Franco will once again miss out here. Likewise, South African youngster Mbekezile Mbokazi is still recovering from a muscle issue.
Completing a blockbuster MLS switch this summer and notching three goals in his previous four appearances across all competitions, Polish icon Robert Lewandowski will lead the line on Sunday.
Portland Timbers
As for the visitors, making an immediate return to winning ways earlier in the week as they secured a 3-1 Leagues Cup victory against Mexican outfit Tijuana, Portland are enjoying their own extended purple patch. Punching their respective Leagues Cup knockout stage ticket, the Timbers are enjoying their most fruitful spell of the 2026 campaign. Getting August underway with a 2-1 win at home against Seattle, Sunday’s guests have won four of their previous five appearances across all competitions. Likewise, Marti Cifuentes’ men have suffered just a sole defeat from their last seven outings. However, it should be highlighted, Portland have won just a pair of their last 10 showdowns outside of Oregon – a run that stems back to the middle of February.
Both still dealing with respective injury issues, Portland will travel to Soldier Field without the duo of Alexander Aravena and Colombian defender Juan Mosquera this weekend.
Registering 10 goals across all competitions so far this season, Venezuelan youngster Kevin Kelsy will lead the line at Soldier Field. Former Lens star David Da Costa will partner Cole Bassett in the middle of the park.
Chicago Fire vs Portland Timbers Key Factors to Consider
- When Chicago and Portland last met for an MLS showdown back on February 14th, the Timbers claimed a dramatic 4-3 victory at Soldier Field.
- Chicago have won their previous four appearances across all competitions by an aggregate score of 9-3.
- Portland have won just a pair of their last 10 showdowns outside of Oregon – a run that stems back to the middle of February.
- The Timbers have failed to register a single clean sheet outside of Oregon over the past 12 months.
- Seven of the last eight meetings between Chicago and Portland have finished with both teams finding the net.
Mustering just a pair of wins from any of their previous 10 consecutive matchups outside of Oregon, Portland should be bracing themselves for a stern examination here. Watching Chicago embark on a sensational Leagues Cup romp this month, Sunday’s hosts are enjoying what has been quite the purple patch. It should also be highlighted, the Fire have won each of their last four straight showdowns at Soldier Field by an aggregate score of 9-3.
