Pre-season: Alonso speaks on Mudryk’s performance in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus

Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, has commented on Mykhailo Mudryk’s performance following the Ukrainian’s return to competitive football after a 20 months hiatus.

Alonso addressed the media after the Blues faced a 1-0 loss to Juventus at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Wednesday, marking their third preseason match.

The coach also shared updates regarding the fitness of Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill.

He stated, “Yes, they experienced a few discomforts, not injuries. Cole took a knock and Levi did as well, so it was prudent not to take any risks today, and we hope they will be ready for Saturday.”

Colwill was not present during open training on Tuesday, while Palmer trained separately from the main group.

Mudryk made his eagerly anticipated return to the field after nearly two years away. The 25-year-old winger, whose anti-doping suspension was lifted last week, came on for Nicolas Jackson late in the second half.

When asked about Mudryk’s brief appearance, the Blues manager remarked, “I am very happy for him. It was an emotional moment for everyone at the club to see him back, especially when I informed him before the match that my plan was for him to play 10-15 minutes.

“He was undoubtedly excited. After such a lengthy absence, being back on the pitch was a wonderful experience for him and for all of us as well.”

Edon Zhegrova put Juventus ahead midway through the second half with a stunning strike from distance that found the top corner. Chelsea managed to restrict the Italian side to just one other shot on target during the match, but they were unable to secure an equalizer.
