Few characters embody Power Rangers quite like Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank). The original Green Ranger remains one of the most recognizable Rangers of all time, but his legacy extends well beyond his first helmet. Tommy served on more individual Ranger teams than any other character, building a career that repeatedly brought him back to protect another generation. After his debut in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, he traded green for several other colors, with each transformation giving his story a new direction.
His Mighty Morphin White Ranger, Turbo Red Ranger, and Dino Thunder Black Ranger costumes all have their admirers, and deservedly so. Nevertheless, none has displaced the original Green Ranger as Tommy’s definitive look. That dragon shield remains difficult to beat for sheer presence. Power is another matter entirely, however. His original suit and Power Coin pale beside the extraordinary potential of the Zeo Crystal, which powered his first Red Ranger transformation. Now, that version of Tommy Oliver is making a comeback.
For years, action figures have helped keep Power Rangers alive between screen adventures, giving longtime fans another reason to revisit their favorite teams. Playmates’ Power Rangers Unlimited Collection continues that tradition with figures aimed at collectors, just like the now-discontinued Lightning Collection from Hasbro did in years gone by. Following months of anticipation, the Playmates displays at China Toy Expo 2026 have finally offered a closer look at its Zeo Red Ranger, finally giving fans the opportunity to add Tommy’s striking red and gold costume to their premium action figure collections.
Power Rangers Zeo Gave Tommy His Most Powerful Transformation
Tommy’s strongest transformation has an advantage that even his iconic Green Ranger powers cannot match: its power source keeps getting stronger. The Zeo Crystal grows more powerful over time, giving the Rangers who draw upon its fragments basically no limits. The Dragon Power Coin made Tommy legendary when he took the spot as the MMPR team’s sixth Ranger, but the Red Zeo Subcrystal gave him continually expanding, theoretically limitless, potential.
This fact means that his stint in Power Rangers Zeo was Tommy in his more powerful Ranger form. Power Rangers Zeo also marked Tommy’s first turn as a Red Ranger. He had already become team leader when he became the Mighty Morphin‘ squad’s White Ranger, but Power Rangers Zeo finally put the franchise’s most prominent hero in its traditional leadership color.
That history makes the Power Rangers: Unlimited Collection Zeo Red Ranger from Playmates especially appealing to collectors of premium Power Rangers figures. It’s a chance to capture and display one of the most significant appearances of the franchise’s most significant Ranger. With the incredible attention to detail of the Unlimited Collection itself, which includes logo display stands and swappable helmet-free heads, it’s an awesome addiction to any Power Ranger action figure collector’s display cabinet.
30 Years Later, Power Rangers Zeo Is Still Underrated

It’s not only fans of Tommy Oliver who have cause to celebrate the Power Rangers: Unlimited Collection (originally teased at the Power Rangers Collector Series). It’s a significant step for Power Rangers merchandise because, for the first time in what feels like decades, Power Rangers Zeo is getting the recognition it deserves. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became a cultural phenomenon that its successors were always going to struggle to match. However, its popularity should never obscure how effectively Power Rangers Zeo continued the story. Arriving in 1996, Zeo kept most of the remaining MMPR cast and carried their adventures forward. Viewers were watching familiar heroes rebuild after losing their previous powers, giving the new costumes emotional weight beyond their obvious merchandising appeal.
The returning cast made that transition feel natural, while the new central villains, the Machine Empire, supplied a fresh threat that made the upgrade and subsequent change in costumes and Zords feel necessary. Power Rangers Zeo preserved the friendships, humor, and ongoing character stories that made MMPR work. At the same time, it also proved that Power Rangers could completely reinvent itself without losing its appeal, establishing a crucial precedent for the franchise’s future.

The geometric helmets remain distinctive, and the gold detailing gives the team a unified appearance that still allows for plenty of individuality in each Ranger uniform. It’s also a pivotal chapter in Tommy Oliver’s story, and the move to being the team’s Red Ranger feels both earned and significant. It is a sequel that rewards attachment to the original series while offering enough new material to justify the transformation. Few Power Rangers shows offer the same kind of natural transition to the next chapter.
That makes Playmates’ decision to choose the Power Rangers Zeo team for the first batch of Power Rangers: Unlimited Collection figures especially satisfying. There’s already been a lot of hype surrounding the line for this reason, and images from the display at China Toy Expo display suggests the wait will be worth it. Tommy Oliver’s Red Ranger return as a premium action figure isn’t just significant because of his character, but because it’s part of a celebration of a chapter of Power Rangers history that deserves far more attention.
