Possible No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa drops major workout news before draft

BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa recently revealed that he didn’t participate in any team workouts as the potential No. 1 overall pick ahead of the 2026 NBA draft.

Dybantsa was a consensus first-team All-American, averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 33.1% from 3-point range. He led the country in scoring after totaling 894 points, the third-most by a freshman in history.

The 6-foot-9 forward was initially expected to only work out with the Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz, who have the first two picks in the draft. However, Dybantsa said on the “Baseline Banter” podcast that he only met with teams in unspecified cities.

“I didn’t work out for none,” Dybantsa said. “I just visited the cities. … Take me to the facility, take me to dinner, talk. I don’t got to work out. … They know what I can do.”

While Dybantsa didn’t name the Wizards and Jazz as the teams he visited, ESPN reported that he met with both last week. The Wizards have since narrowed their focus for the top pick to him and Darryn Peterson, who will only meet with Washington.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded because of his physical tools, athleticism and ability to seemingly score at will from everywhere on the floor. He showcased his athleticism last month at the combine, recording a 42-inch max vertical jump, the fourth-highest mark.

Dybantsa entered the season as the front-runner to be the No. 1 overall pick, and he will likely be one of the first two players selected in the two-night draft, beginning on Tuesday.
