Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the country, citing recent killings, kidnappings and the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in Borno and Oyo states.

The concerns were contained in a statement shared on Obi’s official page.

According to the presidential candidate, two weeks after the abductions in both states, the victims are yet to regain their freedom despite ongoing efforts by security agencies.

Obi also referenced recent attacks in Plateau, Kogi and Anambra states, where several people were reportedly killed, injured or abducted by armed assailants.

He cited the killing of at least seven persons and the injury of 10 others in Gwon-Ajang village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, as well as the reported abduction of more than 25 persons and the killing of a resident during an attack on Ayegunle-Igun Community in Kogi State.

Obi further lamented the killing of two police officers in Anambra State and recalled the abduction of dozens of pupils, students and teachers from schools in Oyo and Borno states on May 15.

“Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens,” Obi stated.

Obi said the continued attacks highlighted the country’s security challenges and required urgent attention.
