Police investigating Jets QB Geno Smith after woman accuses him of battery

Police in Florida are investigating New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith after a woman accused him of battery. 

Police in Davie, Florida, which sits just southwest of Fort Lauderdale, were called to Smith’s home on Sunday after a woman said she was assaulted by him. The woman claimed to be Smith’s ex-girlfriend, and also posted a video of the alleged dispute with Smith on social media. 

An arrest was not made on Sunday, and Davie Police said on Monday that this was not an active case. But on Tuesday morning, an investigation was opened. 

“We were informed [Monday] evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives,” A Davie Police Department spokesperson said in a statement to ESPN. “It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”

Neither Smith nor the Jets have commented about the allegations.

Further specifics of the incident are not yet known, though the woman said on camera that Smith “ran outside and attacked me,” and she told the 911 dispatcher that “my ex-boyfriend just beat me up” when calling police, via The California Post.

On social media, the woman wrote that Smith “beat my ass,” that he “he hates taking care of his special needs kid” and “can’t be left alone with him because he’d rather watch s*x online and play Call of Duty.” 

The mother of Smith’s 6-year-old son, via ESPN, defended Smith in an Instagram story on Sunday night. The mother, a different woman, said that Smith “is and always has been more than capable of taking care of his son.”

Smith has been in the league since 2013, when the Jets selected him in the second round of the draft out of West Virginia. He had a bit of a career revival with the Seattle Seahawks in recent years, and spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. He led the league with 17 interceptions last season while the Raiders finished tied for the worst record in the league. 

The Jets acquired Smith in a trade from the Raiders for a late-round draft pick swap in March. While the 35-year-old is not the Jets’ quarterback of the future, he was named the team’s starter for 2026.
