The Bauchi State Police Command has foiled an attempt to steal eight cows in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred at about 2:58 am on Thursday, September 3, 2026, following a tip-off from a concerned resident who alerted the police to the activities of suspected cattle rustlers.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the spokesman for the command, SP Nafiu Habib, the suspects were allegedly seen loading cows into a Chevrolet saloon car with registration number DAS 452 NE.

The police said two cows had already been loaded into the vehicle, while six others were being kept nearby awaiting loading when operatives attached to the Darazo Division arrived at the scene.

The suspects reportedly abandoned the vehicle and the cows and fled into the darkness after sighting the police.

The police recovered the Chevrolet saloon car with two cows inside, while the remaining six cows were found tethered nearby.

The eight cows and the vehicle were subsequently taken into police custody as exhibits.

The command said efforts were made to identify the rightful owner of the recovered cattle, who was later granted the animals on bond, while a manhunt had been launched for the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the resident whose tip-off led to the recovery.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies, assuring residents of the command’s continued commitment to protecting lives, property and livestock across the state.
