Podcast: Still trying to digest the Orioles trading Rutschman

· · 2 min read

Today marks a week since the Orioles traded Adley Rutschman to the Red Sox for a trio of high-ranked prospects in Boston’s system. Although I’ve mostly gotten over the immediate feeling of anger, there’s still something sad about it and that’s what was on my mind when I sat down to record this week’s episode of the podcast. If not even Rutschman is going to be here for the length of his team control years, what hope is there of ever having another new name arrive on the list of Orioles franchise greats?

Of course, Mike Elias doesn’t care about that kind of stuff, and he shouldn’t. His job is getting the Orioles to be a winning team. Problem: He’s completely failed at that job for the last two seasons, and partially failed even during the two seasons where the O’s did make the postseason. He doesn’t know how to add the right talent to an already-good core of a team! And apparently he doesn’t have any idea what to do to fix a core that’s broken, either.

Also in this episode, a mailbag question from a listener about Gunnar Henderson’s price at this point gets me thinking through a variety of permutations about how things could go for him over the next couple of seasons. As everyone watching the team this year can see, Henderson is on a terrible trajectory, and if he doesn’t break out of that, it’s probably cost him hundreds of millions of dollars.
