Two big things happened in Birdland over the weekend. They got swept by the Brewers and finally buried their wild card chances for the season. The other, more long-term thing that happened is Mike Elias was going around sounding pretty sure that he’s not about to be fired in a week, and he said specifically that he expects manager Craig Albernaz to be back as well.
In sitting down to record this week’s episode of the podcast, I am not surprised to see Elias back. That seemed like the simplest explanation for why David Rubenstein said over the summer that he couldn’t be more pleased with the job that Elias is doing. He said that because he believed it, never mind that there is so much to be desired about how the Orioles have played over the past two seasons, with the team not simply stagnating but actively deteriorating under Elias’s stewardship.
Early signals are that there is some gear-shifting going on even as Elias remains in charge with Albernaz in the dugout. Will it be enough? I don’t know. I try to talk myself into this in this episode and of course, I cannot. Beyond the front office, there’s also a lot of rant content about Albernaz in this one, because I was still in disbelief about the whole business with Samuel Basallo bunting in Friday night’s game. I’m still in disbelief right now! What is that guy doing? What is his problem?
