Pocognoli not concerned about Scotland’s goal drought

Sebastien Pocognoli insisted he is not concerned about Scotland’s lack of goals ahead of their Nations League clash with Switzerland on Tuesday.

Scotland drew 0-0 with Slovenia in their first game under Pocognoli, despite accumulating 2.2 expected goals (xG) from 17 shots, four of which were Opta-defined ‘big’ chances.

Oliver McBurnie has failed to score in all 17 of his appearances for Scotland in all competitions, with the goalless draw at Slovenia his first game for the national side in 2,005 days.

Scotland have failed to score in their last three internationals after also blanking twice at the World Cup. They last failed to score in four consecutive matches between February and May 1971.

Nevertheless, ahead of his first home game in charge, Pocognoli is confident his Scotland side can change their fortunes in front of goal.

“It was one game. Some games you score. Some games you are unlucky,” said the Belgian.

“I don’t think there’s any concerns from my side to score goals because we have good strikers. It’s not only the strikers, but we are creating chances from many positions.

“Let’s say we score [against Switzerland], I hope, and we can open another topic. I really hope we can start strong in the game.

“It will be a special moment, first time at home. I’m really looking forward for that moment since I’ve been appointed. As a new gaffer, that was really the date that was in my schedule that I want to experience.”

Scotland have won just one of their last six meetings with Switzerland in all competitions (D3 L2), with this their first meeting since a 1-1 draw at Euro 2024.

Switzerland have won just one of their eight away games against Scotland in all competitions (D2 L5), though it was on their last visit in a March 2006 friendly (3-1).
