Rapper Plies is known for his HBCU athletics advocacy and gave a major endorsement to Plies makes huge endorsement of SouthSouth Carolina State football coach Chennis Berry. Berry has had a phenomenal three seasons at South Carolina State, resulting in two straight MEAC championships and two appearances in the Celebration Bowl, including a win in the 2025 edition.
Plies took to his social media on Wednesday to speak highly of Berry, saying, “Whoever Lands CHENNIS BERRY Gone Get A Real Program Changer!!! I Think He Can Have A Similar Impact On The Big Stage Like Curt Cignetti Did!!!! He Gone Attract All The Hard Hat Kids The Ones Who Really Wanna Grind!!!”
He then went on to post about Berry again on Thursday, commenting on how he builds his programs.

The two posts about Berry drew the ire of some in the HBCU community who want Chennis Berry to stay at South Carolina State and for conversations about him becoming the head coach of other institutions to cease. Plies particularly took exception to one response to his Thursday post.
“Come on Man,” @Dainty360 posted in response to Plies. “Just WHY! He is apart of a REAL program now!!! Check out SCSU HISTORY!!! I am a FAN of YOURS but stay away from OUR BELOVED COACH!!!!!”
Plies quoted the tweet and said, “With All Do Respect What The F*ck Be Wrong With Y’all? Only People With F*cked Up Minds Think Everybody Else Is Up To Some F*cked Up! I Simply Think Dude Is A Terrific Leader On Young Men. End Of Stop! I’m NOT The Reason He @ SCSU & Won’t Be The Reason If He Ever Decided To Leave”
Berry’s success with the Bulldogs is causing massive attention and uncomfortable conversations about what the success could lead to in the near future.
