The big wheel of industry continues to turn. With the PlayStation 5 now almost six years old, Sony are looking towards the future of gaming. But with inflation, RAM shortages and price hikes across the board for hardware, will we really see the PlayStation 6 any time soon? Surely the PlayStation 5 still has plenty of life under the hood? The PS6 must still be years away, right? Well, hold on to your fedoras because the next generation of consoles might be coming sooner than you think. Let’s get into it.
Taken from an alleged insider on X (so take with a pinch of salt), the announcement of the PlayStation 6 is just around the corner. In fact, Millie A declares that the launch date for the next generation of PlayStation consoles will be announced early March 2027. With that being less than six months away, does that mean we’ll be getting our hands on the PlayStation 6 in time for the holiday season 2027? A glance at previous launches would suggest that that won’t be the case.
The PlayStation 5 was first announced back in April 2019 and the console itself didn’t release until November 2020. With that in mind, it would seem more likely that the PlayStation 6 will come to market in Q4 of 2028, which makes sense. At that point, the PlayStation 5 will be 8 years old, which is quite a long stretch for any generation of console’s life cycle. Whether it launches in 2027 or 2028, the fear of component price hikes is very real, and Sony fans may want to start saving now.
Holiday season 2028 seems most like for the PlayStation 6 as Microsoft are targeting a similar launch window for their next-gen console currently known as Project Helix. We’ll know more once dev kits start being released to developers as this gives a clearer picture of the expected launch timeline. But what will a PlayStation 6 cost the fans? Well with the Steam Machine costing $1049 for the base model and even recent handhelds like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X costing $1000 approx, the future isn’t looking good for gamers.

With Hideaki Nishino, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stating that Sony does not intend to sell next-gen hardware at significant losses, the PlayStation 6 is almost certainly going to cost upwards of $1,200. Q4 2028 now seems pretty close, considering the amount of money fans will need to save up between now and launch just to keep up with the gaming industry. Might be time to try and get a second job to pay for the greatest hobby on earth!
With March 2027 fast approaching, we’ll know, soon enough, the roadmap for Sony’s next-gen console release. Until then though, I’m personally going to stick with my PlayStation 5 until it dies. With games like Grand Theft Auto VI just around the corner and Crimson Desert having just released a gigantic DLC, there’s plenty of life left in the old dog. Also, did we mention just how great the newly released Phantom Blade Zero is? Who really needs a PlayStation 6 when we’ve got such amazing games already to keep us entertained?
