Plateau varsity lecturers suspend strike after agreement with state govt
The agreement also covers the provision of safe and secure residential quarters for staff and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to improve security.
The government and the union further agreed on the cessation of what the lecturers described as the intimidation of union leaders, an issue earlier raised in a May 18, 2026 letter addressed to the union’s congress through the university Registrar.
Another key issue addressed was the payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards.
Following its review of the agreement, the congress resolved to suspend the strike from 12:00 midnight on September 16, 2026.
The union subsequently directed its members to return to their academic responsibilities and resume all activities.
ASUU’s Plateau State University branch also expressed appreciation to members of the public for their understanding and support throughout the dispute.
