Plateau Police impound 14 vehicles in crackdown on illegal number plates, unregistered cars

The Plateau State Police Command has commenced enforcement of vehicle registration laws and improper use of number plates across the State.

In a press statement signed by SP Alfred Alabo, Public Relations Officer of the Command, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, said the operation is “in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu”.

Adding that, “It is aimed at addressing security concerns associated with unregistered vehicles, concealed, defaced, or altered number plates, unauthorized foreign registration plates, and other non-compliance that hinders vehicle identification and tracking.

According to him, “So far, fourteen vehicles have been impounded for violations.” 

“The owners/operators have been charged to court for offences bordering on the use of unregistered vehicles, possession of vehicles with covered or defaced number plates, unauthorised display of foreign number plates, and replacement of approved registration plates with manufacturer logos or other unauthorised inscriptions.”

The Command reiterates that the enforcement is a proactive security measure to prevent criminal elements from exploiting improperly registered vehicles or obscured identities to evade detection, and to ensure all vehicles meet legal standards.

Ewah has directed officers to maintain, “professionalism, fairness, and strict adherence to the rule of law. 

He assured the public that the operation is not to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but to enhance public safety and strengthen crime prevention.

The CP further called on vehicle owners and motorists in the state to ensure timely registration and maintain clearly visible, valid number plates as required by law. Violators will face appropriate legal action.

“The Plateau State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and appreciates the support of residents in building a safer Plateau,” the statement stressed.
