The Boston Red Sox traded for Dustin May last year, but he struggled with the team. May signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in free agency and threw a complete game shutout on June 15.

May has made just one start since that game and lasted just two innings. He left the game with back tightness after giving up six earned runs and six hits. He, who skipped his last scheduled start, is reportedly ready for his next one. However, the back tightness and struggles in his last start are more of what have plagued him in the last few years.

Injuries have been a major concern for May as of late. May spent time on the injured list with the Red Sox with an elbow injury. He did not pitch in the postseason. May missed all of 2024 after suffering an esophagus while rehabbing from a 2023 arm injury. He can be a solid arm, but he needs to stay on the field to do that.

The complete game shutout was a glimpse into what May was before the injuries. Many believed that it would get him back on track, but he hit a roadblock once again.

The Cardinals are fighting for a spot in the postseason, and they will need May to be sharper than he has been overall. He has a 4.30 ERA in 15 starts. His overall numbers showcase why the Red Sox let him walk.
