There’s a lot to like about what the New York Yankees have done on both sides of the baseball when healthy this season, but I’m still a bit worried that they aren’t as good as they need to be. The Yankees have a chance to win a World Series because of some of their top guys, but the bottom of their lineup definitely needs to be improved. 

The Yankees replacing guys in the bottom of their lineup with players who can come in and not only make an impact but also be among the better hitters on their roster would be a scary thought. 

It’s impossible to say that the Yankees have all the ammo they need to make every trade at the deadline, but they have enough to land most players.

One player that I’d love for them to go after is Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros. I know there are questions about him being available, but MLB.com recently brought up the idea that he could be on the move, and that should excite a lot of Yankees fans if they get involved.

“The Astros, who have gotten several stars back from the injured list in the past couple of weeks, still think they can make a run at the postseason now that they’re getting closer to full strength and are in a weak division, so it’s unlikely they would trade anyone from their Major League roster. 

“If they do fall out of contention by the Trade Deadline, Peña becomes a possible trade chip. He will be a free agent after next season and has already turned down a contract offer to remain in Houston beyond 2027,” Brian McTaggart wrote.

From a pure player standpoint, there’s no debate that Pena would be exactly what the Yankees are looking for. 

I understand New York and Houston have a rough history because of the Astros’ cheating scandal, but replacing Anthony Volpe with the former World Series champion would be as big an upgrade as the Yankees can realistically make right now.
