The Patriots paid a hefty price to land Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, sending a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder to the  Eagles. However, inside the building, the Patriots believe it acquired far more than a dominant playmaker. According to Downing, Brown’s greatest strength may be what happens before the ball is ever snapped.

“A.J. is a very smart player, so understanding the ‘why’ is important to him. Explaining what he has to do is one thing, why he has to do it is another. Players with that kind of football IQ can kinda go rogue at times if they don’t understand exactly why they’re supposed to do what they’re supposed to do. A.J. always asks us questions. He’s not bashful about saying, ‘Why do I have to do that?’ If you give him a good answer he’s usually gonna do it.”

Downing knows Brown better than most coaches around the league. The two previously worked together with the Tennessee Titans, where Downing watched Brown evolve from a physically gifted young receiver into one of the NFL’s most complete offensive weapons. According to Downing, Brown’s development was not solely about route running or athleticism. Early in his career, the former Ole Miss star could overpower defenders with pure talent. As the years passed, his understanding of offensive concepts, coverages, and route adjustments elevated his game to another level.

That growth became especially valuable when the Titans acquired star receiver Julio Jones in 2021. Brown seamlessly adjusted his responsibilities and moved around the formation as he understood the bigger picture behind the offense rather than focusing solely on his individual assignments. The Patriots are counting on that same football intelligence to accelerate Brown’s transition into Josh McDaniels’ offense. Brown has already impressed teammates and coaches during organized team activities, while also drawing praise for his willingness to learn the system.

His arrival also comes at a critical time for Maye. The Patriots spent the past two seasons searching for a true No. 1 receiver. Now Maye is a two-time Pro Bowler who has accumulated more than 6,500 receiving yards and 46 touchdowns since entering the league in 2019.

The physical tools were never in question. Brown’s size, strength, and ability after the catch have terrorized defenses for years. What Downing’s comments reveal is the engine behind it all. Brown does not just want instructions but wants the reasoning, the strategy, and the purpose.
