New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson will be out for Wednesday’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. This was confirmed by the team in Tuesday’s injury report.

Henderson has been battling an ankle injury that he originally suffered on August 24. He slipped on the turf during a cut and left practice. There was hope that he might have a chance to play when he made the trip with the team to Seattle.

However, he was unable to participate in practice during the week, which ultimately nixed his chances of appearing in Week 1.

Henderson was a key part of the Patriots‘ running back room last season. He carried the ball 180 times for 911 yards and nine touchdowns. However, he was stifled by the Seahawks’ defense in the Super Bowl. The Ohio State product had six carries for 19 yards in the game, as the Patriots’ rushing attack could not get things going.

With Henderson officially out, the Patriots will turn to Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner as their top running back options, while also potentially calling up Hassan Haskins or Lan Larison for the No. 3 role.
