Former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker will assume the role of tight ends coach for the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
Welker has built a solid coaching resume dating back to 2017, when he served as an offensive and special teams assistant for the Houston Texans. He then went on to serve in two separate wide receiver coaching roles for the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins.
Last season, he worked as a personnel assistant for the Commanders and made a good enough impression to get promoted back to a position coach, after initially being moved to an offensive assistant.

Welker was a legendary Patriots receiver from 2007-2011.
He caught 672 passes for 7,459 yards and 37 touchdowns over 93 games. This included the historic 2007 season that saw him tally 112 receptions on 145 targets for 1,175 yards and eight touchdowns. Welker surpassed the 100-reception and 1,000-yard marks in five of his six seasons with New England.
He will now have an opportunity to continue coaching up the next generation of NFL players looking to make their own mark on the game.
