Patrick Mahomes put in the work this offseason to get back onto the field.

After Mahomes, 30, tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee in December 2025, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has been hard at work doing everything he can to suit up for the start of the 2026-27 NFL season.

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes spent “seven hours a day” working on his recovery since his injury. “He just goes. He kept playing, he gets his rehab taken care of before and after practice, you know how he is — he’s all in,” Reid, 68, told CBS Sports host Evan Washburn at the team’s training camp.

“He’s a great example to all the other guys around him that, ‘I’m gonna do whatever I have to do to get myself on the field,’ ” Reid continued, noting that he and the organization make sure to “monitor” their star quarterback and work with medical staff to make sure he doesn’t over do it.

“I’m gonna listen to the doctors, I’m gonna listen to the trainers,” Reid said, noting that he knows how Mahomes “is wired” to work. “You take it day by day, and he’s attacked every day,” said Reid.

When Washburn asked the head coach if “at this point” in his relationship with Mahomes, he’s “gaining even more appreciation for the toughness and intensity he brings to his craft,” Reid said the quarterback had “a good teacher” in tight end Travis Kelce.

“He had a good teacher with Kelce, so Kelce, you know was the first one to do it, and you gotta beat him over the head to get him off the football field,” Reid joked.

He went on to share that Mahomes “spent his offseason here” in Kansas City. “He didn’t go anywhere. Seven hours a day, he was there working…and it pays off for him,” said Reid.

Mahomes has been looking good during Chiefs training camp this season — and the father of three had some special support from his wife Brittany Mahomes and their children at camp on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The Chiefs host the Broncos in primetime Week 1.
