The Carolina Panthers might have finished their search for Jonathan Brooks’ replacement after the running back aggravated his groin injury during the 34-3 victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Panthers have turned to a veteran option to fill the void left by Brooks, who is now considered week-to-week. The Panthers have reportedly brought in free agent running back Austin Ekeler to work out for the team on Wednesday. Schefter floated the former Los Angeles Chargers star as a potential replacement for Brooks.

Ekeler, who tore his Achilles last season with the Washington Commanders, has reportedly received medical clearance. The two-time NFL touchdown leader has rushed for 4,765 career yards and 43 touchdowns in his career. He has also hauled in 480 receptions for 4,288 yards and 30 touchdowns.
He suffered a season-ending injury (non-contact) during the game against the Green Bay Packers. It was only the second game of the season. Before the injury last season, he had accumulated 43 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards.
Ekeler’s best season came in 2022, when he recorded career-high 915 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a receiver in 2019, he caught career-high 92 receptions for 993 yards and eight touchdowns. He was with the Commanders in the 2024 season, which saw Washington reach the NFC championship game.

The Panthers have not performed well in the running back department, ranking 20th in rushing offense this season after two games. Chuba Hubbard leads the team with 102 rushing yards on 22 carries, followed by Jonathan Brooks (30 yards on nine carries) and AJ Dillon (25 yards on eight carries).
Ekeler’s experience could give the Panthers’ rushing offense some edge and versatility. His pass-catching abilities can be well used too in the game.
As for Brooks, it’s not the end of the road for him. Since he also suffered from the same issue during training camp, the Panthers might express caution before bringing him back on the field.
In his absence, Hubbard and Dillon are expected to get most touches in the backfield.
