The Green Bay Packers play a division rival to open the 2026 season. Green Bay will square off with Minnesota in Week 1, making it an early must-win game for both teams. One former Packers player will not be ignored during defensive game planning before the season opener.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleurissued a warning about one of his former players during a recent interview. He warned that Vikings RB Aaron Jones is still a dangerous player even at 31 years old.

“I think he’s still quite the guy. Yes, he’s got more wear and tear, but the guy’s a dynamic player, a dynamic person and can really hurt you,” LaFleur said on Wednesday, per Ryan Wood.

Jones started his career in Green Bay as a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent his first seven seasons with the Packers before joining the Vikings back in 2024.

It looked like age was catching up with Jones during his final season in Green Bay. Jones only managed 142 carries for 656 rushing yards and two touchdowns that season in 11 games. But that all changed after Jones arrived in Minnesota.

The veteran running back had a career season in 2024, racking up 255 carries for 1,138 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He also added 408 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air.

Now Jones shares a backfield with Jordan Mason, which limits how many touches he gets per game. But make no mistake, LaFleur is right to be worried about Jones.

This will be the first real test of Green Bay’s new defensive scheme under Jonathan Gannon. Packers fans should expect Gannon to prioritize stopping the run, as it is the engine of Kevin O’Connell’s offensive scheme.

It will be fascinating to watch how the Packers defense holds up against Jones and the Vikings this weekend.
